This spring, members of Floyd|Snider staff have participated in a number of activities to help foster a love of engineering and the environment in local youth.

Jessi Massingale spent a morning at the first annual career fair at David T. Denny International Middle School. Jessi described to students what a typical day looks like as an environmental engineer and shared the experiences that led her to her career with Floyd|Snider. The soon-to-be high schoolers asked great questions about contamination treatment technologies and how much math was involved in this job.

Amanda Sweet and Kristen Legg brought a creative and engaging activity to the annual STEAM night at Arbor Heights Elementary. Throughout the evening, kids visited their booth to learn about fish barriers and to design their own marble run to get the “fish” downstream. The students engineered a wide range of runs, some complete with habitat for protection and culverts to bypass roads.

Valerie Lu spent some of her yearly volunteer time reviewing applications for the Washington Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS), a program Floyd|Snider supports through yearly sponsorship. WSOS supports Washington residents pursuing higher education in high demand fields such as STEM and healthcare. As a volunteer, Valerie reads applicant essays that highlight students personal growth, perseverance, and aspirations. These essays provide applicants with an opportunity to demonstrate their motivation and potential to make a positive impact in their communities, even if they may not meet traditional academic benchmarks.
